Two years ago, I first came across the term “venture studio”. I was fascinated by the novel approach to entrepreneurship. How was it possible to repeatably build startups from scratch? So during our time at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, my classmate, Mitchel Peterman and I started to dig into the industry. We wondered: what made venture studios work? were the economics sustainable? were venture studios around to stay?
So Mitch and I embarked on a year long project to answer these questions. We spoke to 20 studio leaders internationally and covered everything from why they started the studio, how their ideation process works, where their capital comes from, and who they hire. To help us understand how venture studios fared financially, we built a model and analyzed the impact of key decisions like how much equity a studio takes or whether they raise a fund. “Venture Studios Demystified” is the culmination of our work. We are excited to see where studios go next.
