The Third Sphere Fellowship program is 2 years old and it has far exceeded our expectations. As we approach a new round of applicants for this summer, we wanted to share some reflections on our approach.
🔵 Our selection process: With an amazing pool of candidates, we try to find ways to challenge our own biases. One person on our team organizes our final round of candidates into a process to produce an anonymized response to a specific project prompt. Most of the team doesn’t see names, linkedin etc. We pick fellows based on the compatibility of their written work as a way to ensure we can create a meaningful collaboration during the four month program. There are some unsurprising credentials (i.e HBS, Stanford, etc.) but there are a lot of folks with less obvious credentials, who float to the top, and we are lucky to show the ropes of climatetech and navigating the venture ecosystem. It usually doesn't take long for someone's previous roles to come in handy during diligence.
🔵 What fellows do: Deal memo support, reviewing techno-economic models, impact math, and accompanying us for site visits or doing taste tests for new types of low GHG, high protein foods. Beyond investing, fellows also work with us on producing and hosting our events, like our annual summit in Tulsa or our SF and NY Climate Week events. They also help refine the tools and resources we use to support founders and run our fund. Today this includes helping us evaluate LLMs and the latest features of our internal CRM.
🔵 What fellows get: the experience of writing about and talking through investments to understand what questions and signals might be most important at the very earliest stages and for subsequent underwriting. They often join us for meetings with founders, co-investors, LPs to learn as many sides of the VC business as possible, and most importantly— how to prioritize a high volume funnel of amazing companies.
🌐 Where are they now? Most of our fellows have gone on to work in climate finance. We’d like to think our time together helped a tiny amount.
