ESG investing landscape has exploded, with ratings agencies playing a pivotal role in shaping investor decisions. However, a closer examination reveals a system with quite a lot of shortcomings.
Let's take the example of MSCI, a large player in the ESG ratings industry. MSCI has faced criticism & backlash for its methodology. It claims to assess a company's exposure to ESG risks, but the reality is murkier. A Bloomberg Business investigation (by Cam Simpson, Akshat Rathi & Saijel Kishan) highlights how McDonald's received a higher credit for installing recycling bins in France and the UK, a move to comply with the regional laws rather than a genuine commitment to sustainability. This casts doubts whether such actions truly reflect a company's environmental impact.
And this is just one instance. The team has analysed a lot more of these credit upgrades.
Moreover, MSCI's focus on "financially relevant" ESG risks can lead to a narrow perspective that ultimately overlooks the overarching societal & environmental concerns. This approach prioritizes short-term shareholder value over long-term sustainability.

This requires a more comprehensive evaluation of factors like resource consumption, waste generation, human rights practices, and supply chain transparency.
For now, I think it's essential to approach ratings with a critical eye. By demanding greater transparency and accountability from rating agencies, we can drive positive change.
