Shola Lynch

Shola Lynch is an award-winning American filmmaker and curator. She served as the Curator of the Moving Image & Recorded Sound Division at the New York Public Library's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for over a decade, from 2013 to 2024.134

Lynch is best known for her documentary films, including:

  1. "Free Angela & All Political Prisoners" (2012), which received honorable mention at the Tribeca Film Festival and won an NAACP Image Award.12
  2. "Chisholm '72: Unbought & Unbossed" (2004), her directorial debut, which won a Peabody Award.12

In addition to her filmmaking career, Lynch has:

  • Become a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2016.13
  • Earned a Master's in American History and Public History Management from the University of California, Riverside, and a Master's in Journalism from Columbia University.12
  • Worked as an associate producer on Ken Burns' documentaries, including the series "Jazz" (2000).3

As of January 2025, Lynch has joined Spelman College as the Diana King Endowed Professor in Film, Filmmaking, Television, & Related Media, where she also serves as the director of the documentary film program.12
