Two weeks ago, the Court of Appeal handed down a landmark, unanimous judgment, which allowed over 200,000 victims of the 2015 Mariana dam collapse, represented by PGMBM, to seek redress against BHP in the Courts of England and Wales. Six years on, the victims have still not received adequate redress for the worst ever environmental disaster in Brazil. To this day, the effects of the disaster are being felt in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. The river is still contaminated, people are still homeless, they can no longer grow crops, and they can no longer drink from the water. Every time the river floods in periods of heavy rain, the toxic metals from the iron ore waste continue to contaminate the land, roads and homes of the people who live near the river. So, it was astonishing to listen to this interview with BHP CEO Mike Henry where he brags about BHP’s ESG credentials and talks about how social value is something that runs through every business decision they make.

It goes without saying that these 'social and environmental' commitments are not worth the paper they are written on until real justice is provided to the victims of the Mariana dam disaster for the misery and despair they have suffered at the hands of BHP. It is time for BHP to do the right thing, live up to their so called social and environmental values and provide justice for the victims of Mariana. #greenwashing #bhp #brazil #mining #environment
