Well I must say that I did not have this on my bingo card for 2024, but happy to share that I'm now a FinOps Certified Practitioner from FinOps Foundation!
Fellow designers, don't forget to understand the problem space your product sits in — even if it means dipping your toes into the 'exciting' world of financial operations :p

Hello world 👋
I wasn't sure how or even if I should write this post. Timing is tough given the current climate within tech but my goal here (above all else) is to have my fellow designers walk away feeling more hopeful and less futile about their prospects. I'd also like to fire a warning shot across the bow to companies who think it's okay to treat potential hires with a lack of respect and/or trust.
About a month ago I started dipping my toes into the market for new opportunities. At first I ran into a lot of doom and gloom with recruiters. The worst advice I received "take what you can as companies currently have all the leverage, you can always swap later".
Then came the egregious interview rounds and over confident founders. To any hiring manager out there please just trust the talent! If you want to waste time over indexing (especially in design) you're going to scare off the real gems. Standardized testing is the bane of the education system (not to mention the damage it does to under represented groups) so why on earth are we doing it in tech? Stop calibrating and start being humans again.
I've hired a LOT of designers over the years, some based solely on the strength of a chat over coffee. Never once have I been disappointed with that individuals impact. Sure, I like to see a well crafted portfolio but most importantly I choose someone with a strong culture fit. Soft skills are an underrated commodity and a great sign of personal growth.
Americans have a very unhealthy relationship with work. For those that need to hear this right now — you are not defined by your job and your self worth should not be determined by how lucky or unlucky you've been professionally. Know your value and believe in it, after that anyone is lucky to be in your orbit.
Let me end on a positive note. Of the offers I received recently one really stood out and not because the product was the flashiest or because they'd raised the most money from X, Y or Z. Instead it was a deeply personal moment of compassion. I recently lost my father-in-law and having to take care of my spouse and surviving family members has made it tough to travel for in-person interviews. After an energetic first call with Matthew Parkhurst & Shreyas Iyer they simply text me to ask "would it be okay if we came to you?". They drove 2.5 hours to meet me in-person! We spent the day together and had a great time, no pre-canned questions or silly design exercises just a real chat about improving the product (you know the thing I'd actually be doing).
So with that said today I'm happy to announce that I've joined Antimetal as their new Head of Design and I wish each and every one of you luck in your search. If I can be of any help or you just need someone to vent to please don't hesitate to DM me.
P.S. big thank you to Soleio and Liam Matteson for the connection and support! If you're in the US looking for great design recruiters may I humbly recommend Sophia Garibaldi and Jared Tredly.
