🚨 Attention Australian Designers: It is time to Define Design! 🚨
The ABS has released proposed draft changes to the ANZSCO classifications, and while there are many positive updates, there’s a major oversight: Strategic Design, Service Design, and related fields are not yet included. Laura Kostanski and I are working with Design Institute of Australia to raise awareness on it.
We have until 6 September to make our voices heard. If you’re in these professions, now is the time to act—share your impact, provide evidence, and ensure these vital roles are recognised. Let’s shape the future of design in Australia!

It was a pleasure to host UN Women Asia and the Pacific at the Portable offices in Collingwood last week. UN Women had team members (Agata Walczak, Petra Burcikova and Doreen Buettner) coming in from Europe and Asia to work with our team (Emily MacLoud and Willhemina Wahlin) on helping to craft their next 5 year vision to advocate for Access to Justice in our region. In societies increasingly affected by climate change and its associated migration to cities, we unpacked how we can support women and children to improve their access to justice.
Being able to make a difference, using our skill sets of design and technology, is core to the work we do at Portable. The world is not short of problems to solve, so we were excited to be able zoom out and partner with UN Women in this goal of new ways of thinking and response.
Our team developed and facilitated a 5 day engagement using a combination of Human Centred Design and Legal Design frameworks to help support the team to reach their goals. Here is the team with some of the outputs at the end of the process. Looking forward to supporting as a design and technology partner in the future.
