Professional Background
Simon Webster’s journey into the world of business and finance began rather unexpectedly due to a serious knee injury. After completing his A Levels, Simon initially intended to take a break and spend his summer in leisure. However, his parents had other ideas and encouraged him to seek employment in London, despite his reliance on crutches. His first position as a credit controller for sub-prime, unsecured lending during the late 80's recession turned out to be a pivotal moment in his career. This initial role ignited a passion for the financial industry that would shape Simon's professional life.
Following three successful years in credit control, Simon transitioned to a startup mortgage lender in Windsor, taking charge of their small residential repossessions portfolio. This was during a tumultuous time when interest rates surged, and many customers abandoned their properties. Faced with this challenge, Simon implemented a pioneering computer system using Paradox DB to manage the growing repossession portfolio efficiently—a considerable feat given the technological limitations of the time, as the internet and networked computers were not commonplace. His innovative approach to scaling operations led to his promotion, further establishing his capabilities within the sector.
Recognizing that managing the financial aspects was increasingly vital, Simon developed a predictive algorithm that accurately assessed bad debts, ultimately saving the company from significant losses. This strategic insight propelled him to pursue further qualifications, leading to his prestigious CIMA training—a feat that would enhance his expertise in finance and operations.
With an extensive background in finance, Simon further solidified his reputation at Legal and General, heading their salesforce finance team while facilitating a significant relocation from Kingswood to Cardiff. In 2000, he received an enticing offer from a former CEO to move to Jersey, where he took the helm at Computer Patent Annuities (later known as CPA Global). As part of a small executive team, Simon played a fundamental role in driving the company's growth both organically and through mergers and acquisitions.
Under his leadership, CPA Global underwent a management buyout (MBO) in 2010, supported by ICG, a private equity group based in the UK. Simon’s strategic vision and adept business acumen facilitated an extraordinary doubling of the company’s enterprise value within just two years, leading to an exit to Cinven in 2012. As CEO from 2015 onward, Simon continued to build on this trajectory, culminating in another successful exit to LGP in 2017, where he replicated the impressive feat of doubling the business’s value once again.
In less than three years, Simon orchestrated the sale of CPA Global to Clarivate, enhancing the company’s valuation to an astounding £5.5bn during his tenure.
After leaving Clarivate, Simon founded SHUFL Capital, a venture capital firm dedicated to investing in innovative solutions that promote happiness and well-being. This unique approach to investment reflects his commitment to aligning business success with positive societal impact.
In 2022, Simon was appointed as Group CEO at Vistra, where he is focused on the ambitious mission of doubling the company's size and redefining industry standards in the process.
