🌞 Today is my 35th time around the sun

In these turbulent times, it is hard to take a break from the immense suffering millions of people due to global wars and climate change. There are so many immediate problems we as a civilization need to solve and many long term problems we need to invest in if we want to avoid letting history repeat itself.

Human Rights and Ocean Conservation are two causes that my wife, Brin Spencer Lee and I personally support and for my birthday this year, I invite all my friends and family in supporting The Hydrous, a 501(c)3 non-profit that I co-founded in 2014. https://lnkd.in/g_qU8_PZ

It has since become an organism, a community on its own, fueled by passionate people like our CEO Erika Woolsey, PhD, who believe that the way for real change is for people to experience and engage with these beautiful ecosystems. Ultimately, our planet will be fine without us; but our livelihood is very much dependent on how well we preserve our own largest food, water, and oxygen source.

I’m proud to say that a decade later, The Hydrous has scaled its impact worldwide, with 1M+ people who have experienced our immersive educational content, and many more with our digital 3D models, hands-on learning kits and multidisciplinary partnerships.

Our work has won Webby and Anthem awards, been featured by CNN, Forbes, and WIRED and been conducted in partnership with National Geographic, Smithsonian Institution, Stanford University and United Nations

By subscribing to our new Patreon, you will be supporting our goal to connect 10 million learners to the ocean by 2030. You will also be the first to receive new immersive ocean experiences, digital 3D assets, and other learning materials.

Ultimately ask yourself if you’d like your children and grandchildren to see an ocean devoid or full of life. We must protect the things we love the most.

I can’t describe how good it feels to see our contrarian convictions about XR play out through the #Apple #VisionPro announcement. Here are a few of the strongly held beliefs Isaac Castro García Mauricio Teran and I had while building Emerge® that have been reiterated by Apple.

1/ Mobile XR is overhyped. Everyone thought the first product would be slim glasses - but when has that ever happened? Have you seen the first computer, first desktop computer, first iPhone? With every platform leap in the last 200 years, utility was first considered, and mobility was a secondary thought. This is the reason we’ve been designing for “spaces” - your desk or your couch, since the beginning at Emerge®

2/ Range of motion is overhyped. Many in the industry have been too focused on a large range of motion - people want room scale. But pay attention to how much of the Apple release showcased people in a comfortable position with their arms resting comfortably close-by. Minority Report - great movie, exhausting UX. In 2018, our human factors research unveiled that the “primary kinematic sphere” - which is about 3ft high and 3ft wide - was our goal. We found users would rest their elbows on desks or their knees for long duration use.

3/ The killer use case is not fitness, it's not even gaming, it's communication. Human communication has driven every previous consumer computing paradigm shift. It's in our nature. Very few understood what we were saying in 2015. It's becoming obvious now. Communication solves a real problem: the loneliness epidemic - https://www.linkedin.com/news/story/is-loneliness-the-new-burnout-5634100/. FaceTime was great but today is a terrible experience, which opens up a big opportunity for a level up with Vision Pro. In pic #3- This is how I called my mom on Mother's day this year. In XR - a holographic call with grandma or your grandchild - that’s a 10x better experience. (And it's a 0 to 1 with @emerge). People misunderstand the "calling tiles" - this is a necessary step. Consumer behavior 101: design for MAYA - most advanced, yet acceptable. It's coming.

4/ Pricing - $3,499. I think this one aspect of the Vision Pro will likely revamp the industry - it gives it time to breathe and evolve, and Apple will at least break even along the way.

Analysts and investors 😊 Apple stock price ⬆️ Apple continues building and innovating.

Solve a real problem, people will pay real money. The high price tag of Vision Pro was also necessary to focus the product value proposition. Mass market pricing results in many varied value propositions amongst many user segments = kitchen-sink approach to product.

We're building something really special at Emerge®, a multi-sensory communication platform. If you would like to be able to physically feel and connect with loved ones across distance and time, join our waitlist for what's coming soon: http://emerge.io
