Sommer Alex is a Stanford University student who participated in the Susan Heck Interns program at the Clayman Institute in 2022.1 During her internship, she focused her research on security and surveillance practices, applying theoretical frameworks from feminist studies, queer studies, media and performance studies.1 Her project examined airport security as a site for investigating the normative effects of surveillance practices and their consequences for individuals marginalized by race, class, and gender hierarchies.1

In 2023, Sommer was awarded the Donald Kennedy Public Service Fellowship, through which she worked with OUTWORDS Archive in Los Angeles, CA.2 In this role, she helped capture stories of LGBTQ+ pioneers and elders across America through two-hour interviews, assisted with social media presence, and conducted research and outreach for potential interview subjects.2
