Dear friends and colleagues, I want to share this important effort with you, because i know that so many of you love to make a difference and create positive impact! And these venezuelan children need our help!
I’m helping Fundacion Tricolor de Amor (based in Caracas, Venezuela) raise money to help treat hydrocephalus kids (children that are born with brain swelling). This year they only have this fundraiser to help them collect the funds needed to treat 25 kids.
Hydrocephalus is a dangerous condition that causes swelling in the brain. In Latinamerica, 2 to 3 out of every 1000 children are born with this condition. Without any treatment, the chance of survival is 50%; but with treatment, most of these children can live completely normal lives.
The main barrier for these families to get treatment is the lack of funds to purchase the valve that needs to be surgically implanted to drain the fluid causing the swelling. The hospital in Caracas can perform the surgery, but due to the country’s humanitarian and health crisis, they don’t have the resources to purchase the valves.
The relentless volunteers, at Fundación Tricolor de Amor in Caracas, take care of all the logistics to identify the families, screen for fitness for a successful surgery, negotiate the price for the valves from a trusted supplier, and deliver to the doctors that perform the surgeries. Unfortunately this year we’re their only source of funding!
Here’s the link to the gofundme campaign. Because it’s so difficult to do international transfers to the venezuelan bank accounts due to sanctions, I am raising through gofundme, and I personally make sure that we purchase the valves and equipment directly from the supplier. Next year we will hopefully have a more direct system from a US foundation straight to the Venezuelan foundation.
