Moonshot Apprentice at Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation
Sophia Victoria Yushchenko is a student at New York University Abu Dhabi, pursuing studies in Legal Studies, Economics, and Urbanization. She embarked on a gap year in 2018, working for an energy management company in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sophia is the co-founder of Connect Ukraine, an NGO that unites social entrepreneurs, corporate entities, innovators, artists, technologists, and ethical hackers globally to collaborate on projects shaping Ukraine's future. Additionally, she co-founded Children of the World to the Children of Ukraine, a charitable organization aiding children of fallen soldiers in Ukraine.
Highlights
This past Sunday, we concluded the final presentations of the first Code for Ukraine Program camp. Witnessing the remarkable growth of these students has been an incredible experience, and this is just the beginning!
From more than 300 interviews, we selected 50 exceptional Ukrainian students (27 female, 23 male) aged 14 to 17 to participate in the Code for Ukraine pilot program for free. With a focus on inclusivity and accessibility, our initiative prioritized participation from marginalized communities, including displaced persons and the children of veterans and fallen soldiers. The program kicked off with an intensive two-week coding and design camp where students engaged in hands-on learning experiences led by expert volunteers from prestigious U.S. universities (Stanford University and Columbia University) and leading tech companies. This camp is the first of three that students will participate in over the next year. Throughout this initial camp, students developed their Python skills and created their own videogames.
Seeing this program come to life has been a great honor. An even greater honor has been witnessing the spark in the students' eyes as many discovered a newfound passion for coding.
With the curriculum's emphasis on critical thinking and problem-solving, these students have developed (and will continue to develop) the ability to apply their hard skills in creative ways. My greatest hope is to see them pay it forward and help their communities thrive. Ultimately, it is only with everyone's participation that we will rebuild Ukraine better and stronger.
To complete their projects, the students had to utilize valuable life skills like teamwork, project management, adaptability, creativity, and public speaking. They began by learning Python coding, then engaged in creative thinking to generate project ideas, collaborated to bring these ideas to life, and finally presented their work in front of an audience that included guests, UCU faculty, parents, and fellow students. I am immensely proud of each student and eagerly anticipate their future projects in the upcoming camps.
