My Game-Changing Negotiation Bootcamp At Harvard
Recently, I had the privilege of attending a 6-day negotiation course at Harvard Business School, a game-changing experience that truly transformed my approach to negotiations. Here are some key takeaways from this enriching opportunity:
-
Full Immersion Learning: Embracing a pen over screens allowed me to engage deeply with the material, fostering a more immersive learning experience.
-
Amazing Cohort: The diverse cohort, ranging from serial entrepreneurs to Navy SEALs and professionals from various industries, provided a rich tapestry of perspectives that enhanced our discussions and overall learning.
-
Mastering the Acronyms: Throughout the week, we delved into key negotiation concepts like BATNAs (Best Alternative to a Negotiated Agreement), RVs (Reservation Values), and ZOPA (Zone of Possible Agreement). These acronyms became second nature by the end of the course.
-
Avoiding Overanalysis: Balancing analysis with intuition proved crucial, as being overly analytical can sometimes obscure the main point of a negotiation.
-
Seeking Hidden Information: Unveiling hidden data can unveil the real picture, potentially saving a deal or even lives, emphasizing the importance of probing beyond the surface.
-
Maximizing Value: The course stressed the significance of maximizing both individual and joint value in negotiations, encapsulated in the quote, "Don't throw cash in the bin."
-
Framing and Anchoring: Practicing techniques like framing problems and anchoring numbers with solid justifications was highlighted as pivotal for steering negotiations favorably.
-
Maintaining Integrity: Upholding integrity, being mindful of biases, and remaining open-minded throughout negotiations were emphasized as crucial elements of the negotiation process.
Those 6 days were truly transformative, game-changing and intense. This experience has really honed my approach to negotiations and given me new negotiation pathways that I will apply in my future endeavours.
