I glance over most 𝚎̶𝚖̶𝚊̶𝚒̶𝚕̶𝚜̶ newsletters in my inbox.

Here's one I read (and why):

  1. The first sentence was open-ended and made me want to keep reading.

People talk about hooking readers with your lead.

Easier said than done, of course.

It's why we often have to wade through all sorts of fluff at the beginning of too many newsletters and articles. (bad)

Here, I didn't stop to ask if I wanted to keep reading. I got curious, so I did! (good)

  1. It was funny.

The bit about drinking beer while watching hockey on an off day honoring an old British monarch being a Very Canadian Experience got a genuine chuckle.

If you understand your audience, a smidge of self-deprecating humor can go a long way (good for both writing and public speaking).

  1. It ties back to the product/community in an interesting way.

If you live for the LinkedIn drama like me, you'll understand why I had to fight the urge to go find the original comment thread that sparked this whole tale.

Context in the images below.

This isn't coordinated promotion or anything — just thought it was a great email. Credit goes to the author Eric Doty, who wrote this for the Superpath weekly newsletter (a good read, in case you don't already subscribe).

(Sharing with my network in case I can make a connection)

Some of the most impactful work I've done in my life came before my career in content marketing.

In 2019, I spent a life-changing year in Guatemala doing volunteer communications and marketing work for NPH Guatemala. NPH provides a loving home, education, food, and community to kids impacted by extreme poverty in Guatemala and eight other countries in Latin America.

As a non-profit, they rely on donations from corporations and individuals to fund initiatives related to sustainability, education, and more. Now, they're looking for help raising funds to plant lemon trees in the garden at the foundation.

If you know anyone in corporate responsibility/non-profit giving (or even an individual) who might be interested in helping out, feel free to have them reach out to me directly. I can get you connected with the wonderful team led by Evelyn María Gómez Barrera in Guatemala. (Evelyn gave her permission to share this.)

To read more about NPH, you can visit their site here: https://nph.org/guatemala/

Thank you!
