As a member of Generation Z and as a young, immigrant voter, I recognize the importance of getting out the youth vote. I also recognize its obstacles.
I created VOTE 101 to increase accessibility to credible, non-partisan voter information for students at UC Berkeley. Published on the first day of Voter Education Week, VOTE 101, a free course on UC Berkeley’s Learning Management System, has seen widespread enrollment among undergraduate and graduate students and has drawn participation in #WhyBearsVote, an in-progress video project intended to highlight the voices of students on campus.
With information about vote-by-mail and polling places, along with ideas for staying civically engaged that are separate from voting, VOTE 101 offers a unique opportunity to institutionalize civic engagement efforts in course enrollment by allowing students to access resources in the same place that they access their university coursework.
I’m beyond excited to move forward with the institutionalization of civic engagement efforts on the UC Berkeley campus community and beyond. As time goes on, the youth vote will become increasingly influential in our democracy, and I pledge to do everything that I can to protect it. VOTE 101 is only the beginning.
