Highlights
In Mumbai, even the simple experience of a ride in an auto rickshaw can contain the most profound lessons.
I recently sat in one for a short ride (apologies to my non-Mumbaikar friends - you'll never know the comfort and convenience of just jumping into an auto rickshaw without having to haggle over the fare!).
The fare was going to be Rs. 23. The moment I sat in, the auto-driver said "I have no change". I said what about for Rs. 100? He said "no change". I fished around in my pocket, found a 50 and said "What about for Rs. 50?" He said no. I asked "Scanner?" He said no. I grumpily got out, crossed the street to a street stall and got the change, getting a tiny bit annoyed at having to walk around in the mid-day heat.
When I got back in the auto I quizzed him indignantly - "boss, why don't you just use the QR code with UPI?"
It seemed like such a no-brainer to me. And it is so ubiquitous! (I have previously been coerced into giving money to beggars on the street signals who triumphantly whip out a QR code when I say "I have no change!")
He simply reached into his pocket, pulled out an ancient blue Nokia handset and said "QR is pe nahi chalta hai. Ghar mein smartphone hai par voh ladke ko diya hai - uski B.Pharm ki tayyari ke liye. Hamara enjoy karne ka time ho gaya hai - ab uska time hai." All of this with a smile on his face.
I was instantly humbled. As I stepped out of the rickshaw, I felt a deep appreciation for the resilience and selflessness that people like him exhibit every day (and a twinge of foolishness at my own presumptiveness).
I asked if I could take a photo with him, to remember this encounter. He agreed with a smile. Here's the face of one of the unsung heroes of Mumbai!
