America wastes over 3,000,000,000 gallons of gas every year in traffic congestion! Yet another reason to ❤️ #EVs — they are 'fuel' efficient in traffic, especially when standing still, because electric motors do not idle; they turn off.

Not so with internal combustion engines. New data shows that in 2022, gas and diesel vehicles wasted 3.3 billion gallons of fuel stuck in traffic congestion, emitting over 29 million metric tons of carbon dioxide while crawling down the highway!

Think about it from a money-lost perspective — though the fuel wasted is a mix of gasoline and diesel, for simplicity's sake, let's imagine it is all gasoline. At $3.37 per gallon, today's national average, 3.3 billion gallons wasted equals $11.1 billion up in smoke! To all those commuters enduring daily rush hours, start tracking how much of the $11.1 billion you are paying for. You may find that buying an EV is a high-earning investment.

Think about it from a climate perspective — the carbon emitted from idling traffic in 2022 is the same as from 7 million passenger cars driven for a year, 3.8 million homes energy use for a year, or 7.5 coal-fired or 78.3 natural gas-fired power plants in a year!

This fuel waste is as much related to the gas and diesel vehicles most folks drive as it is to the communities we design; the latter creates traffic congestion, and the former converts the problem into tailpipe exhaust. Redesigning communities to be less car-dependent is necessary and will take a long time. Meanwhile, we can buy tailpipe-free EVs today and stop the waste.

The gallons of wasted fuel calculations are from our friends at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), Vehicle Technologies Office and can be found here: https://lnkd.in/e8mDbih8

A fantastic tool shows apples-to-apples gas savings driving an #EV in each state by showing the cost to "fill up the tank" of an electric car, SUV, or truck compared to various legacy gas alternatives.

What I love about this tool is that it calculates comparisons at the "fill up" level instead of annual savings based on miles driven; drivers may not know how much they spend on gas annually, but everyone knows what it costs to fill up the tank. Take, for example, the Georgia market snapshots below. When educating consumers about EVs, it is a powerful conversation starter to say that if they drive a gas SUV and switch to an electric SUV, they will save upwards of $23.25 every time they fill up their battery instead of their tank.

The tool pulls data from sources that track electricity and real-time gas prices and adjusts for range discrepancies between #EVs and ICE, ensuring apples-to-apples comparisons.

Visit the site linked here, click on the state of interest, and see the cost savings when you "fill up the tank" of an electric car, SUV, or truck. Thanks to the good people at Energy Innovation Policy and Technology LLC for building the tool.
