Highlights
What is more dangerous than layoffs? The cycle that follows soon after ☝️
Not long after the initial - and brutal - impact of the news, the new reality sets in fast: Uncertainty, emotional distress, financial loss...
Worse? The compounding effect of mass layoffs, during an economic downturn with record inflation rates
It is only natural, (and expected) for professionals to rush into an application streak, trying to mitigate the damage and speed up 🏃♂️🏃♀️ the transition into a new role
However! This process of risk management does not reduce the risk, it just hides it behind your now more urgent priorities
The inherent risks of a new job search are rampant as ever, namely:
Getting trapped in a position with no growth opportunities Joining a non-enabling, or worse, toxic culture Compromising on the compensation
Any combination of these, can build upon the existing stress and greatly increase the chances of looping you back around in the same position, sooner than you may expect
When the market floods with talent, the power shifts to the buyer, and this is never healthy for job seeker
From compensation packages taking a hit and cutting corners in selection processes, to joining already stressed teams that may disband not long after
So before even going down this lane, consider:
Can you take a break and realign with your priorities? Is this a good opportunity for a career change? Where is your time best invested in?
And any other important factor that impacts your happiness and that of the people around you 🥰
Granted, not everyone can afford to wait out the storm. So keep an eye out for that connection 🤝 of yours that may have been affected.
You, or someone in your network, may hold the key to diffusing much of this risk and changing someone’s livelihood
Good news: A close friend in TA shared with me that the trend is shifting - and more people approach this strategically.
To the people & culture professionals in my network - which trends do you observe?

Work-life - balance or battle? 🤔
Feels like whenever I sync with friends, every other topic is about managing work and expectations while trying to carve out time for life.
It is basically an elimination game where the time left for self-focus is spoiled by the challenge of disconnecting 🔌🧠
More than often I come across the term “Tetris” in context to how people manage their tasks and calendar 🗓
While I see your point - I would argue that this is not 🙅♂️🙅♀️ a healthy approach!
The problem with the Tetris analogy? Many!
For once, it does not account for healthy boundaries (ie breaks), the end goal after all is to cram as many things as you can in a limited amount of space 🫠
On another point, tasks are not always square things that start and end at specific points. And in the end, it's a race against time that can easily get out of hand as the game speeds up.
A proposed alternative 👉 play Jenga with your Calendar!
Fix blockers in the hours you are not supposed to work (incl that lunch break!) Add buffers to your meetings (10mins to stretch before the next task) Now fill in the gaps with your tasks/meetings
This is your tower - and it will ensure you maintain a safe pace. Now work in reverse 🔄
Calendar full and something new has to go in ⬇️? Something else must come out ⬆️first!
Don’t book it on top! Re-prioritize 💡
That “one more thing” and “I will accommodate” are unhealthy habits that you are better off without.
7 in 10 people report feeling burnt out (that includes management) - do your best to be one of the other three, and remember to proactively check in with your colleagues!
Stay energized 🔋
