These are some of the hard questions in cybersecurity that elude most industry specialists and vendors because they reside deeper than the simple symptomatic analysis of cybercrime, which is otherwise a chronic problem with deep roots. The more important question that helps address problems is the why: “why does the problem occur in the first place”, not the how: “how does the problem manifest”. Addressing the “how” might give you some temporary relief, but the problem will almost always resurface, either the same, or in a slightly different way. To eradicate a problem we need to understand what the enablers are, and that leads us to the question of “why”, the difficult questions which is often multiple degrees of separation away from the effects, and takes into consideration many different aspects, the dynamics, the context, which are not always present in the manifestation of the problem. Consider this, when solving crimes in the real world, detectives are always searching for a key ingredient, motive, the “why”, the drivers of the crime, which is not present in the crime scene.
