Putting creative work into the world is a fascinating and powerful experience. When Natalie Rothfels and I set out to create what became The Ripple Deck (www.rippledeck.com), our first idea was to make just a handful of decks to give to friends, we hadn’t imagined a kickstarter and professional printing! Our intention was simple: for us to learn about our own power.
So I wanted to share a few things I've learned about some important powers we all have:
The Power of Intention We started with brainstorming, and I learned to truly broaden my idea of what power looks like. The process of looking for power helped me see it everywhere-- from our power to include others and chearlead them, to our power to listen, our power to disconnect and unplug. I also see the power of intention when I see people using the deck. My friend Bobbi treats it as a sacred daily ritual, and the cards feel magical to her.
The Power of Collaboration Creating this deck was an amazing lesson in the power of collaboration. I had to let go of the idea that we each needed to contribute equally in terms of time or task. Instead, Natalie and I each contributed wholeheartedly what came naturally to us, regularly checking in about next steps (and reassuring my part that gets worried that I'm not contributing enough). I learned to value the feeling of natural and effortless collaboration.
The Power of Presence This is a power that I'm actively learning to embrace, to truly believe that my mere presence has an impact (even in zoom with 80 people!) without doing anything specific. I've understood presence in terms of mindfulness and paying attention rather than mind wandering. But this idea, that just being present is a power that impacts the collective feels like a new edge. I’m used to being the shy kid, hiding, watching. But I’m not really that kid anymore and my presence, at its best, is inviting, warm, helps others feel safe or sometimes joyful.
We have a limited number of copies of The Ripple Deck still left-- if you're interested in learning more or buying a deck check out www.rippledeck.com.
Do you struggle with a harsh inner critic, perfectionist or judge? Most of us do, which is why I feel so passionately about building compassionate relationships with these parts of us– and why I’m offering these free 30-min drop-in sessions.

When I think back to my 20s, I didn’t even realize that these voices were running the show. I just assumed all of the criticism, high expectations and judgements were the truth. As I became more aware of them, I could separate from them and gain distance from these voices. As I’ve befriended them, I’ve come to see how fiercely they are trying to help. As I’ve gained their trust, they’ve softened and become less harsh and more helpful.
Curious to get to know one of your critics or judges? You can join just one session or all of them!
-- Befriending the Inner Critic - 3/29 -- Softening Perfectionism - 4/12 -- Transmuting Judgment - 4/26
Each session will be 30 min, with optional Q&A for 15 min afterwards. I'll share a little bit about the topic and we'll do an experiential exercise. The exercises will be done on your own-- you’re welcome to join with your camera off.
