Highlights
I’ve been managing projects for a long time. So long, that I often take for granted all the lessons I’ve collected that inform how I approach my job today. When I was asked to share my expertise at Viget’s most recent quarterly offsite, I really didn’t know what to share. “I just figure out how to work with different kinds of people,” I thought, “how remarkable can that be?”
The more I thought about it, the more I realized that meeting a perfect stranger and quickly figuring out how to become their ally isn’t just something I knew how to do when I managed my first project. In fact, I’ve spent the better part of a decade working on understanding people, putting my own frustrations and anxieties aside, and finding the common ground necessary to get the job done.
This isn’t some ✨ magical power ✨ I possess—it’s a practiced skill.
Regardless of your role, figuring out what makes people tick and devising the best ways to work together is a skill worth growing. It’s also not as intimidating as it may sound. Here are the best tactics, from a decade of trail and error, for cultivating a healthy and productive working relationship with whoever the next stranger is you work with.
