Are you the ‘right’ flavor of weird?
1 year as an Austin resident, as of yesterday 🤠 and I have a reflection on this.
You’ve likely heard “Keep Austin weird.” It essentially means there’s a certain flavor of weird in this city, and the city wants to preserve it.
Meanwhile, other cities are melting pots (say SF, NY, Berlin) who don’t tout being weird or preserving it and there are lots of flavors of weird in places like these.
SXSW these past couple of weeks had the vibe of a popup melting pot with 350k visitors from around the world, feeling a lot different than Austin typically feels. It breathed new life into me.
I’m learning I thrive most in diverse places because there are simply so many ways of being, none of them especially right or wrong, inviting curiosity and conversations as bridges among cultures. Feeling grateful for those who have gone out of their way to welcome me, as I vow to be a similar welcoming presence. Living in Austin is an opportunity for growth and contribution.
With respect to the existing Austin culture, I’m excited to continue contributing my flavor of weird, especially for and with others who feel a bit out-of-place, with opportunities to connect and be celebrated.
How? By continuing the Women Creating IRL Community panel series ft. my favorite local community leaders and a live taping of my podcast (2x annual), Somatic Movement events ft. somatic therapists and my hypnotherapy practice (2-3x annual), some secret tea party popups and more to come :)
Cheers to another year, embracing your flavor of weird. Because what makes it ‘right’ is that it’s true.
xx Stephanie
