If your compensation data isn’t updated in real time, it’s outdated. 🥱

At my company ⚡Orum.io⚡, we have several philosophies about comp. I’ve written here before about how we don’t negotiate salaries when you quit….and we really don’t negotiate on the way in, either. 🤷

To be able to take these stands, you need to have a leg to stand ON — meaning your comp data needs to be damn accurate, up to the minute. ⏰

Enter: Carta. 💵

Carta’s compensation tool is the focus of today’s #OrumOdes, a series in which I shout out products our team uses and loves. It’s the biggest database of private company salaries, with an eye for startups in particular. We use it to help create total comp, equity, and bonuses. 📊

You can filter by stage of company, region, role, seniority, specialty, etc. The filters let you get pretty precise, so it's way less guesswork and a lot more precision. (You NEED precision and confidence to implement policies like “we don’t negotiate salaries”!) 🤓

It’s a world 🌎 of difference since starting Orum in 2019. Back then, we received a spreadsheet every six months of backdated information largely from Silicon Valley companies — not New York-based startups. Now there’s magnitudes more data, and it’s updated in real time with Carta. We can mark our salaries to market, and put forth offers we feel really good about. 😃

This approach also helps us ensure that compensation is equitable. As I’ve written before, the folks who feel most comfortable negotiating are those who are already in a privileged position.

So it’s about more than attracting and retaining talent here at Orum — real-time comp also helps us level the playing field in this space overall. ⚖️

Thanks to Henry Ward and the team!

My secret to supercharge startup growth and gain Fortune 500 customers 👇

Startup founders, I see you. You have a dream. You want to serve bigger clients. Grow your team of one or two to a team of 100. Achieve your mission to change your corner of the world. 💪

My advice to you, my secret, is one word.

Consistency. ✨

Putting in the work on the little things, every damn day. Getting there inch by inch. Keeping your big goal in mind, but never losing sight of the million tiny daily steps on that journey. 👟

Many years in as founder and CEO of ⚡ Orum.io ⚡ I understand more than ever the truth of “it’s a marathon, not a sprint.” You train to get there. Here are my tips for how, and where, to stay consistent:

⏰ Set your priorities daily. ⏰ Start your day by streamlining all the chaos and the fire drills. Execute on what’s truly essential for you to get done that day. I’ve written before about how it’s way too easy to get stuck in busywork, or in sending emails and Slacks. Begin the day with consistency in mind, and you’ll stay focused on what matters.

📊 Track those metrics (even when they’re 0). 📊 Pick your North Stars and diligently track them. You’re pre-revenue? Fine. Write that $0 down in the actuals box against plan. Keep these numbers updated each and every month as you grow. Through all of it, you’re seeking to answer one crucial question: Is it working? If you see something that’s off one month, flag it; if it’s off a second month, it’s time to dig deeper rather than just trust it’s a fluke that’ll work itself out. Consistently tracking metrics means you’ll consistently ask the right questions.

✍️ Write thank-you notes. ✍️ Take the two minutes, every single time. Write the thank you after a lunch. Write the thank you after a helpful call. Write the thank you after a customer intro, even if it doesn’t go anywhere. Write the thank you after the customer intro that DOES go somewhere — and then make a note to follow up six months later with ANOTHER note letting them know how things turned out. Consistent gratitude for assistance will only breed more gratitude and support.

🗣️ Talk to your top five (at least!) customers regularly. 🗣️ These folks are the heartbeat of your company. Check in with them, with no agenda. Call them. Visit them. Spend time with them. Get feedback about how their experience is with your company. Be there to answer any questions or concerns. Consistently show your dedication and appreciation.

Those are my daily steps on the journey to achieve Orum’s mission of powering a better financial system for all. I’d love to hear what YOU do on a daily basis, and how you stay consistent! 👇
