Perhaps You can help me understand the necessity of monetary and fiscal policy intervention in COVID-19:

I get the Fed’s $1.5T repo market intervention and I support an aid package for small businesses most affected by this, but it seems that finance professionals and professors are saying the Fed should act fast to stop the bleeding.

If medical experts are urging us to practice social distancing to slow the spread and protect the healthcare system, would this not result in an economic slowdown? People are traveling less, patronizing businesses less, staying home from work to take care of their kids among school cancellation, mission out the NBA, MLB and MLS, etc. Would this not result in less economic output?

Why then the reaction to prevent the stock market from cratering? Are contractions and recessions not healthy parts of business cycle? Even after the past 2 weeks, the market is still up something like 300% from 2008. Doesn’t intervention teach the market that it can get away with driving up asset prices and that the government will keep the economy growing at all costs? If the economy contracts from naturally occurring phenomena and investors believe assets are too expensive and risky, then why not let the economy contract and assets get repriced?
