Friday Fun Fact: Crossing the Rubicon Our language is full of metaphors – “time is money”, “a heart of gold”, “the world is a stage.” How did these phrases become embedded in our daily communication?

“Crossing the Rubicon” is a metaphor that comes from a genuine historical incident. Like "Burning one's bridges" and "the point of no return", it means passing a decisive point, where one cannot turn back. It is a reference to the Rubicon, a shallow river in north-east Italy.

In 50 BC, the Senate, led by Pompey, ordered Julius Caesar to disband his army and return to Rome because his term as governor of Gaul had finished. There was an underlying more pressing political motivation. Because Pompey believed his rival had accumulated too much power, he accused Caesar of insubordination and treason. Caesar thought he would be prosecuted if he entered Rome without the immunity enjoyed by a magistrate.

By crossing the Rubicon river with his troops, Caesar violated an ancient Roman Law prohibiting generals from doing so when returning to Rome. So began a civil war in which Caesar eventually triumphed. leading to him becoming Rome’s first dictator and turning Rome from a republic to an empire.

What Caesar reportedly said at the crossing of the Rubicon is "Alea iacta est" ("The die is cast"). This is yet another metaphor. It comes from gambling with dice: once the die or dice have been thrown, no bets can be withdrawn or added, even before the dice have come to rest.
