I had the pleasure of attending the Advancing Construction Technology conference this past week in Chicago. Here are some of my takeaways/thoughts:

🤖 AI in construction is still an amorphous, shape shifting topic that can mean everything and nothing at the same time... that said, Jim Barrett gave a nice presentation on how Turner is leveraging an enterprise license with OpenAI to unlock the power of custom GPT's for various workflows like safety, analyzing jobsite photos, marketing, with help developing proposals and employee onboarding.

🤖 It's obvious that OpenAI and the coming 5.0 model will require more from construction tech startups as it will be able to provide industry agnostic value to many applicable workflows and eliminate the need for construction specific LLM wrappers.

🏗 There is general consensus that BIM/VDC delivery will continue to evolve...whether it is Gen AI that will disrupt the way in which design is developed or more near term how we structure our teams around the delivery and management of the model, there seems to be a growing understanding that VDC hiring to match growth is not possible and that strategic partnerships with partners like VIATechnik will be increasingly needed.

💡 The number of Directors of Innovation and CIO titles from construction companies increasing which is really encouraging, however talking to some of them there is still an uphill battle to define what success means for that function and successfully drive a culture of innovation for their organization.

⚡ There is a new breed of construction tech startups coming up: - Had the pleasure of spending some time with the founders of Roger Elijah Zenger and Josh Whisenant and left impressed with their intellectual curiosity and humility in how they are looking to serve the industry with what they are building. - Courtney Fuhr of Bridgit had the presentation of the conference in my opinion. She spoke about the importance of planning and while the Bridgit application was certainly pitched, the style of presentation and the effectiveness of the message felt more like a TED Talk or something you would see out of other larger more mature industries.

🏙 Rosemont is an effective location for a conference...but its not Chicago.

While it continues to amaze me what we are able to accomplish digitally...every time I attend a conference I am reminded of the power of analogue as it comes to human relationships.

Unsolicited message to new or recent grads:

Don’t take that remote job. You’ll be foregoing an incalculable quantity of learning via osmosis and be setting a bar for future jobs that will be hard to maintain.

Make you’re first 10 years hard. You’re future self will thank you.
