Highlights
Governments all over the developed world are rediscovering #industrialstrategy in an effort to reboot their economies and develop the industries of the future in the face of #climatechange, #tradewars and the race to develop #AI.
At the same time, the supply-side, market failure-correcting ethos that prevailed in the UK is being superseded by more focus on the demand-side. The idea is that governments can use their massive procurement budgets to provide a market for domestic firms.
In the latest issue of The Political Quarterly journal, Benjamin Meggitt-Smith and I assess several possible 'demand-side' industrial strategies for the UK. We conclude that trying to match the big-spending power of America's Inflation Reduction Act is not viable. Instead, the government should work with entrepreneurs in de-risking new product development, particularly in the #technology and #renewables sectors.

The #LabourParty conference starts this weekend, and up for debate will be the party's #GreenProsperityPlan, a major programme of much needed investment in the #GreenEconomy.
Attacks on #netzero policies from the Conservatives and right wing press have made Labour nervous about big spending commitments, at least until they have the #economy under control. But new #GreenAlliance analysis shows the GPP will galvanise growth, create #jobs, and reduce #energy bills. It's not a burden on the UK - it's just what we need to #decarbonise the economy and create the #industries of the future.
