Back to School and Back to You
Last year around this time, we dropped my eldest daughter off at college. It was an emotional whirlwind—saying goodbye and walking back to the car without her hit me hard. But this year, things felt different. We had our routine down—loading the car, finding the dorm, moving her in. This smoother process gave me the chance to reflect on how these transitions apply to our careers and, more importantly, it was a great reminder that, like Stella, we also need to get back into our own metaphoric classrooms.
What do I mean by that? When I launched my first Promax conference, we used the tagline “Create What’s Next.” It was a nod to our core business—promoting the next show, the next trend, the next marketing strategy. But I never anticipated that it would also mean experiencing the next iteration of our entire industry. After the significant changes we've faced recently, that’s exactly where we are today.
For those of us who’ve been in the game a while, we remember the late '90s as the final chapter of the golden era of cable—more networks, more series, more marketing. Experimentation thrived, and together, we moved the industry forward in exciting ways. The democratization of content creation and distribution has transformed how we operate, and now, the industry itself is shifting in response.
As we enter this new chapter, where viewing habits have changed and the definition of content continues to evolve, it’s the perfect moment to refresh our own strategies and positioning. It’s our moment to go back to school… on ourselves.
And on your first day back, I’ve got some homework for you. I’ve attached a roadmap to help you find your unique path forward in this ever-changing landscape. It’s a step-by-step guide that will help you identify growth areas, align your passions with current trends, and leverage your past experiences to seize new opportunities.
Take a look and let me know what you think. And as always, I’d love to hear from you.
