Highlights
In memory of Wes Wasson, a lesson that he shared with me:
Back in 2005, Citrix had just acquired NetScaler. My career up until that point was exclusively early startups so the sudden shift to Citrix felt like I’d fallen into this massive organization and frankly, I was lost.
A few weeks after the acquisition closed, I was having a particularly bad day and “soldiering up” just wasn’t coming together. The next morning he dropped by my office and checked in on me. I expressed my frustration with the overhead of getting a product shipped and how I didn’t see the point of extra steps that we didn’t have to do as a small company.
He shared this gem with me: Small companies are like hunters with rifles… They are agile and can quickly redirect their attention which is great, but their firepower is limited and it takes time to reload. By comparison, large companies are like battleships. They have a large turning radius and it takes a lot of energy to redirect them, but when they fire, they do so with cannons.
Thanks, Wes. This is one of those gems I've always kept with me and has helped me make the best of both circumstances. I've shared it countless times with my teams to frame why we're prioritizing the work we do. Hopefully some of you find this useful as well.

Ok. This is just boss. Patching Voyager 2 (yes, the spacecraft) to fix a bug. Just to remind y'all, both Voyagers were launched in 1977 so they are 46 years old. This takes serious patience and a whole new level of rigor in testing before sending the patch up. 18 hours of latency and a little over 100 bits/sec so no mistakes allowed.
Keep your ears open for an October 28th update (Thursday) to hear if it was successful. Fingers crossed for sure.
