As the late D-Day veteran Andy Rooney put it, there have only been a handful of days since the beginning of time on which the direction the world was taking has been changed for the better in one 24-hour period by an act of man. June 6th, 1944 was one of them. It was one of the most monumentally unselfish things one group of people ever did for another.
An awful lot to reflect on even eight decades later.
Returning home after several weeks on the road, I was reminded that this week is the 20th anniversary of Ranger and NFL star Pat Tillman's death via friendly fire in Afghanistan. Pat was one of my childhood heroes, not because of his decision to enlist and put a multi-million-dollar career on hold, but by how he lived his life.
For the past decade, one of the most treasured items on my desk is a copy of a young man's diary entry from 22 years ago this month. Whenever I'm struggling with a big decision, I give it a read and smile. “Somewhere inside, we hear a voice...It leads us in the direction of the person we wish to become...But it is up to us whether or not to follow.”
Anyone who knows Pat's story and ethos would know he wouldn't want the recognition himself. As a longtime Pat Tillman Foundation donor, I'd instead recommend catching up on the work PTF is doing. 20 years and almost 900 Scholars later, they are empowering the next generation of military veterans and spouses committed to selfless service in their communities. A pretty remarkable set of men and women carrying on the legacy of a pretty remarkable man.
