I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Director - Technology Solutions at Vaco!
As a job seeker, being referred into a company by a current employee is a promising opportunity. However, being rejected without explanation or even a courtesy call, is one of the biggest slaps in the face a candidate can receive during their job search. It raises the question: what does this say about the company that I was referred to?
If someone currently doing the job doesn't understand the type of candidate that would succeed at the company they are working for, well, that just might be the biggest insult of all! Not only does it waste your colleague's time who referred the candidate but it also discourages them from doing so in the future, because you're essentially telling them their opinion isn't valued and they don't understand the environment they are currently working under.
This phenomenon is making an already challenging job market, even more challenging. Why even engage your network? Why even try to connect w/ past co-workers?
Recruiters/HR, put yourself in the shoes of your colleague who referred the candidate...what if that was your referral that was treated in such a manner? Bottom line, it's a bad look and tells me that the company doesn't understand how to attract and retain talent.
As a recruiter, I defend our profession all the time as we are often unfairly attacked on LinkedIn, but this situation is unacceptable. Companies need to treat candidates and their employees with respect. HR/Recruiters need to understand how they impact reputational risk. Communicate w/ both parties and provide transparency throughout the hiring process. It's the right thing to do for the candidate experience, the employee who referred the candidate, and the company's overall reputation.
