I love Highland Park. We moved here in late 2019, right before the world went into lockdown. In a time of great uncertainty, this community was like a warm blanket. My family was - and remains - so lucky to call this place our home.
I love taking our family to the beach, playing on our front lawn, reading books in our hammock. I can't think of a period of my life when I've ever felt safer.
Last month, when the Buffalo and Uvalde shootings occured I felt - once again - indignant, and wanted to do more.
We donated money. We joined the March for Our Lives in Highland Park.
Protesting and being charitable are, of course, good things. We participated. We explained what we were doing to our kids.
Yet.
Our kids eventually got a little restless and whiny that afternoon. As the march went on, our focus shifted toward solving that more immediate problem. So we got the kids ice cream. We broke off from the march. We went home.
I felt a lot of guilt for leaving the march - a bit pointless in retrospect. But beyond the guilt, I wanted to share the experience of knowing how hard it is to stay in this American fight. To stay engaged, to be righteously angry. To hold empathy for a shared experience of violence to all innocent people.
After each tragedy, we all grow angrier, feel more helpless, less hopeful.
We get scared and say to ourselves, "Holy sh*t. This could happen anywhere."
It took yesterday's events to realize I was also whispering back to myself:
"But...it can't happen here."
Yesterday, that same spot where we marched became the epicenter of the Highland Park Mass Shooting. Where my fellow community members were shot and killed, maimed, and forever traumatized.
I'm so grateful my family is safe today. But I'm no longer able to pretend we are safe in the way our country should be.
We can't give up in these moments. We have to stay in the fight. So, don't give up, stay in the fight, wherever you are. And do some tiny things to make your communities and those around you a little better.
