Speed to completion seems to be the key selling point I'm hearing right now. Nobody wants to be a bottleneck, but we need to be honest about the tradeoffs.
Putting this out there to see if anyone with PR expertise can help me wrap my head around the behavior of a brand that I used to love: Momofuku.
For those who aren't familiar with the story, I'll put a synopsis below. But for anyone who's familiar, here's my question: Refusing to acknowledge an incident and hoping it fades with time is obviously "a" strategy...but is it a good one? I just can't see how David Chang's refusal to apologize is doing anything other than eroding the Momofuku brand.
During COVID, I discovered Momofuku pantry items and immediately became a fan. Yesterday, I finished the last pack of noodles in my house and have no intention to buy from them again. I can't be the only one.
And for those who haven't been following the debacle, here's a brief synopsis: Momofuku is a popular restaurant chain founded by celebrity chef David Chang. In recent years, they've pushed away from growing their restaurants & into growing sales of their at-home cooking ingredients. One of these items is called Chili Crunch...which is basically oil, spices, & chili pepper flakes. It's a popular condiment in countless Asian cuisines. To protect sales of Chili Crunch, Momofuku started sending cease & desist letters to small businesses for using a colloquial term that Momofuku wanted to trademark — and in an instant David Chang went from being a champion of AAPI small businesses to a hypocrite.
Since then, Momofuku has amped up the frequency of it's social posts. On Instagram, they're posting almost daily now. And the comments section is dominated by hate & trademark jokes over every recipe they post. They don't reply to any of them, and hide the ones they can.
When the Chili Crunch debacle first happened, Momofuku fans were clear in what they wanted...a sincere apology for bullying AAPI small businesses. But Momofuku has refused to acknowledge that it even happened. And unless you count some half-acknowledgement from Chang that it happened on a podcast, there's been no apology. They just keep posting to their social feeds and get roasted in the comments section. It's like they have their heads in the sand.
