Stewart Vanderwilt
President and CEO at Colorado Public Radio
Stewart Vanderwilt is the President and CEO of Colorado Public Radio (CPR), a position he has held since June 2018.12 He is a veteran in public media with over three decades of experience leading organizations across the country.1
Prior to joining CPR, Vanderwilt served as the director and general manager of KUT 90.5 (Austin's NPR station) and KUTX 98.9 (The Austin Music Experience) for 18 years.12 During his tenure at KUT, he oversaw significant developments, including:
- Launching the station's first news department in 2002
- Developing "Texas Standard," a national daily news show of Texas
- Opening the KUT Public Media Studios in 2012
- Launching the 24-hour music service, KUTX, in 20131
Under his leadership, KUT's newsroom earned more than 250 awards for journalistic excellence.13
Before his time at KUT, Vanderwilt spent 16 years as the General Manager at WBST from 1984 to 2000.2
Vanderwilt holds a degree in business and marketing from Ball State University.12 He has served in leadership roles within the public media industry, including:
- Vice chair of the board of Public Radio International
- Board member of Greater Public
- Board member of the Station Resource Group (SRG)1
At Colorado Public Radio, Vanderwilt has been leading the organization through significant changes, including:
- Focusing on strengthening CPR's role as a primary source of news for Colorado
- Overseeing recent layoffs and restructuring to align with the organization's mission
- Managing the purchase and relocation to a new $8 million building in Denver
- Addressing financial challenges to work towards a balanced budget456
Vanderwilt is married to Stephanie Gaunt-Vanderwilt, a third-generation jewelry designer, and they have a son named Alex, who is an Army veteran.1
