Despite a turbulent year with little progress in terms of climate action, progress has been made on the analytical front:
- Our (and others') analysis has shown that climate measures and investments can lead to net positive outcomes economically, in particular when compared to a no-action counterfactual that accounts for climate damages.
- This is in part due to so-called co-benefits of climate measures, such as better health, employment, environmental conservation and social inclusion. The IPCC Sixth Assessment Report has been a massive contribution to better understanding those co-benefits, by taking stock of all available scientific evidence.
- Negotiations may have focussed on addressing imbalances in terms of climate vulnerability across countries, but a lot of effort is going into better understanding how climate vulnerability is distributed spatially and across groups within countries (and how they can be addressed)
At Cambridge Econometrics, we will keep working in 2023 to develop and improve our modelling tools to underpin our analysis, and help develop the understanding of the above aspects.
But that's not all. Together with my colleagues at Cambridge Econometrics, we have set out some other key considerations for global policymakers through 2023.
