Design is evolving. We hear it more and more often and we also hear that with these complex societal challenges, using creativity and designerly approaches might be our only way out. This rumour has escaped the walls of architecture, art and design schools, it has overcome the walls of consultancies and museums and has reached a few enlightened decision-makers and some brave politicians. Even at very high level. Still, this notion is clashing with mainstream understanding of how things should be done and even if this story is tingling, very few know what to do with it. That is why we need cases, that make it clear, that compose and clarify the plurality of possibilities that creativity provides. Good examples of how designerly, creative interventions have addressed how our society transforms, beyond the thing itself, beyond the new service or the new process. Good examples that have been able to speak to different actors in society and inspire brave changes, in how people behave, in how ecosystems emerge and interact. Good examples that speak about beauty, sustainability and togetherness. This year Svensk Form, the Swedish Association for Arts and Crafts celebrates the 40th year of their award by adding a new category to their renowned competition: Design for Societal Transformation. This category, open to participants from all over Europe, respond to the need of bringing good cases to the forefront to foster the discussion and understanding of how design can be a key in sustainable societal transformation.
