On AI startups and the path forward
This one is a bit delayed, but with the holidays, ice storms, and such, I didn’t think the delay mattered. After 4 years of being part of Cloudera, two of them as the Chief Product Officer, where we transformed the company from an on-prem big data platform to the first truly hybrid cloud platform that provides a first-class experience regardless of where you run your workloads, I decided that it was time to re-evaluate and plan my next adventure.
It was an absolute privilege working with some of the smartest people in the business, and I am proud of everything we accomplished as a team. Moving 92% of the revenue over to the new platform over 36 months was a testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone on the team. Most people have no idea of how many things would stop functioning if the Cloudera data platform failed to deliver on its SLAs, which made it an awesome responsibility for the folks in both R&D and Support, and generally across the company.
Our customers and partners make us who we are, and we try to live up to their expectations every day. I can’t thank every single person enough in the company, starting with the board, the leadership, my peers, my directs (including my HR and Finance partners), and every single person on the team who would reach out to me on Slack to warn me of things that were likely to go south or opportunities that I ought to look into. Much of what we did or mishaps that we avoided were the result of having an army that watched out for the company all through my time there.
Leading a large team is a lonely job, and you never step into it without moments where you question your ability to lead and not make fatal mistakes. But the kindness of the folks in the company and the willingness to work on shared problems is what enabled me to do some of the best work of my career to date. I would like to thank one person in particular, Wendy Turner, my indefatigable Chief of Staff, for pursuing every continuous improvement project that we kicked off on the team and ensuring that it was run to completion and delivered the agreed-upon KPIs.
You might be wondering why the post did not include an Oscar speech-style listing of names to thank. Well, if you have to thank 2700 people by name, I don’t think the context window can accommodate that yet, but you know who you are and how you shaped our time together. Best of luck to each and every one of you!
