Sue-Lin Wong
China Correspondent at The Economist
Sue-Lin Wong is the South-East Asia Correspondent for The Economist.1479 Previously, she was the China Correspondent for the same publication.147 Sue-Lin also hosted "The Prince," a podcast series that focused on China’s leader, Xi Jinping.479
Before joining The Economist, Wong worked for the Financial Times as a South China correspondent, covering Hong Kong's pro-democracy protests in 2019 as well as the rise of Chinese tech companies.14 Earlier in her career, she was a correspondent at Reuters, covering topics such as the Chinese economy and North Korea.14 Sue-Lin opened the Shenzhen bureaus for both the Financial Times and Reuters.24
Wong graduated from the Australian National University with degrees in law and Asian studies.2
In 2021, Hong Kong authorities declined to renew Sue-Lin Wong's work visa without explanation.3 As a result, she transitioned to covering South-East Asia and is now based in Singapore.5
Wong and David Rennie of The Economist won the 2023 Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia for their coverage of China.9 Wong explained how Xi Jinping navigated his way to power in an eight-part podcast, drawing on the personal history and circumstances that shaped his world.9 Together with her colleagues, she has won Asia’s top journalism prizes including two Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) awards, two Human Rights Press Awards and the Asia Society’s Osborn Elliott Prize for Excellence in Journalism on Asia.7 She has also won a British Foreign Press Association Media Award and been a finalist in America’s National Magazine Awards (ASME).7
