“Do you integrate to Platform X?”  “Does your product support use case Y?”  “What if we wanted the flux capacitor to automatically do complex thing Z?”

With Enterprise software, sellers often find their products’ capabilities and use cases are stretched by customers.

Sure, a lot of sellers have a hard time saying ‘no’ for fear of losing a deal, but most of the time it’s actually less binary than a Y/N.

If you sell a modern + extensible platform then, TECHNICALLY, the customer can do (or pay a services org to do) whatever they want, even if it’s not out of the box.

The question is SHOULD they?

For these sticky use cases, rather than jumping to a “Yes” or giving a flat out “No”, I’ve found it helpful to steer towards the ‘North Star’ of the evaluation and, alongside the customer, question whether these things are critical to getting there efficiently:

Customer: “Can you integrate to XYZ for user groups 1, 3, 5 but not 2, 4, 6?”

Rep: “Tell me more about the use case. Are you looking for that to solve biz problem A?”

Customer: gets to the root of the issue

Rep: “Ah I get it now, thank you. So the way you described it is technically possible, but it’ll mean additional time, cost, and complexity. What ACME similar customer does is ______. It’ll help with most of the problem except _____ and get you live at 1/3 the time and cost”

This builds you trust with the customer and makes it feel like you're BOTH arriving at an ideal solution together!

The term “Compelling Point of View” is used a lot in Sales (especially for those who rely on a outbound motion).

Simply put, it answers the question: “Why should this customer care enough to talk to us?”

I love the way Rubrik JP Bolen breaks down the building blocks of a Compelling PoV in this 9 min Revenue Builders Podcast episode w/John McMahon and John Kaplan

🔎 Know the customer’s business: how do they make money? Is this evolving? who are their competitors? who are their executives + what are they talking about in the news?

🌊 Know the customer’s industry: What undeniable shifts in their world are they being forced to keep up with? (legislature, macro-trends, etc)

↔️ Know how you’ve solved this before: What customer stories can you leverage to build confidence? It’s less about similar industry and more about similar business problem

Understandably, there's a ton of depth to the 7+ questions above, but as JP frames it, at a certain point you need to ‘just go hit somebody’.

Once you have a nugget, customers will respect that you put in the work and be more open to having a dialogue, even if your PoV isn’t perfect!
