The sad demise of Mr Micky Jagtiani of Landmark Group last week was very upsetting for me at a personal level. I never worked for him in any official capacity so my grief can't match those of his employees.

In 2005-06, I was a part of ICICI Bank IBG team in #Dubai. Mr Micky Jagtiani was among the biggest NRIs in #GCC and he decided to invest nearly $40 Mn in an #Indian PE fund via the IBG team. It was a big event and our CEO Mr KV Kamath flew in to celebrate the same.

While we had read media articles on global self-made business icons like #BillGates and #SteveJobs, we only learned first-hand ourselves of the magnitude of Mr Micky Jagtiani's rags-to-riches journey similar to Mr Dhirubhai Ambani to be representing the Indian talent in that league. For an early-career executive seeking inspiration on converting #business aspirations into real life #success at mega scale, he was a rare business hero of that level that I saw and met, and had a working relationship with.

When I joined London Business School in #UK the next year, his example of exemplary business success and decision making just grew on me. For some case studies, I also made PPT of his key moves in establishment of the Landmark Group. Since the #LBS days, I have checked on news relating to Mr Micky Jagtiani every month. No one can deny that Mr Micky Jagtiani was among the top names to have inspired hordes of global #entrepreneurs to choose GCC as their global base in the last decade of various #governments vying to attract global #startups.

Having touched hundreds of millions of lives via his business and #philanthropy initiatives, he sadly bid #goodbye to the world last week. I wish him to rest in peace in his final journey.🙏

Update @Sep"23- #COP28 presidency acknowledged the innovative approach of my book "The $3 gadget- with $100 billion income that big techs missed?". (https://lnkd.in/drVNFAAa)

*Question- Can an Indian big-tech lead India's digitalization of real-time vehicular emissions checks for all its vehicles?

*#Carbon #emissions globally of 37GT with 2.7GT coming from India *India's Air pollution deaths- 1.6 Mn (~23% of global share) *Other issues- Spreading PM2.5 particles in breathable air level causing serious #health ailments. *Vehicular pollution- Accounts for lion's share of air #pollution. *While all #fossil fuel vehicles pollute, 20% of poorly maintained #vehicles cause 50% of excess emissions (over their emission benchmark).   India's vehicular emissions monitoring needs urgent upgrade. Depending on their vintage, vehicles currently take a dipstick Pollution Under Control (PUC) #test every 3-12 months but PUC tests at roadside test centers are done on vehicles in static state & often fail to capture the real carbon emission levels of most vehicles. Other test options seem difficult to be arranged at such a scale.

But what-if there is a way to test & 247 remote-monitor carbon emissions from nearly 100% vehicles on #Indian roads in a tamper-proof #digital way?   The what-if options would never end, but with 1.6 Mn estimated air-pollution related deaths & nearly 6 life-yrs lost (=9% of the avg lifespan) to pollution for every #Indian, there is urgency among all strata of Indians to give a healthy life to their kids.

Bigger Question- Can a transition to 247 digital PUC in #India be done by an Indian #bigtech & not an US bigtech?   Reducing emissions at a large scale can lead to Govt reversing the lost life-years & helping its #youth live healthier & up to 10% longer. No other yardstick of successful #leadership in India's long existence can come close to such an achievement. So, #political will is likely to be there, and a phase-1 target of reducing India’s excess vehicular emission by 50% in the first 3 years seems achievable which shall also lift country’s #ESG rating.   Jio with India's most advanced telecom infra, #B2C presence, internet tech, growing digital business, global ambition, interest in #media/ #ads, & access to #capital is the front-runner to be India's big-tech for this. Its closest contender is Tata Group which owns India’s biggest #software company & is creating #superapps for India's #neweconomy. Also, given the usefulness of Govt mandate on digitized #PUC to be a game changing first step, #Adani Group's is a prime entity to run this #business in India.   India's digitized PUC test market size is around $1 Bn/yr & an early-mover Indian big-tech can expand to other #countries in ~$20 Bn #global #market.
