Great meeting in New Delhi with Indian Cabinet Minister Hon Ashwini Vaishnaw (portfolio of Electronics, Telecom & Railways), as the Sanmina-Reliance joint venture in India led by MD Elan Chelian prepares to take on India's rapid growth in electronics manufacturing.  The Modi administration's initiatives (eg. Digital India and Make in India), coupled with supporting policy incentives (eg. Production Linked Incentives (PLI) and Preferential Market Access (PMA)), have provided a boost to local electronics manufacturing, particularly for the mobile handset industry. The facts tell the story

  • #2 handset manufacturer in the world today
  • over 98% of handsets sold in India were made locally,
  • projected exports of $15B worth handsets in the current fiscal year,
  • Reliance Jio now handles mobile data traffic second only to China Mobile
  • Apple's iPhone manufacturing projected to grow 10 fold from the current 2.3% or so marketshare out of India
  • a target $300B of annual electronics exports per year in the next 5 years
  • recent announcements & launches of a semiconductor fab by Tatas and multiple OSAT (chip packaging - assembly and test) plants across India, including Micron's plant in Gujarat  Sanmina was an early entrant in the India electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) segment, going back over 20 years, and showcasing today, a world class 0.5 million sq ft facility on a 100 acres site in Oragadam (outside Chennai). Having been personally involved in our India initiative from the early days, I can proudly say the Indian team has created one of the best performing plants in Sanmina's global 20-country footprint. Sanmina India does not build handsets or other consumer electronics, focusing instead on our traditional DNA of mission critical, engineered infrastructure products.  Our Chennai plant has a commendable record of shipping base stations, radios, filters, antennas, small cells, access equipment etc, from the early days of 2G/3G to 5G today, Intel based liquid cooled servers for HPC and India's supercomputing mission (NSM), a host of medical devices like FDA approved glucose meters for export to the US market, electronic assemblies for imaging modalities like ultrasound, MRI, PET, as well complex products supporting the industrial, clean energy, automotive, and defense and aerospace markets.  In addition to quality leadership and a well trained and motivated workforce, a major accomplishment of Sanmina India has been the success in supply chain localization over the past 15+ years - our team in India has developed an ecosystem of roughly 60 local suppliers who are now able to meet our cost, quality and delivery standards for building world class products out of India.   Sanmina India is well poised to enable India's future leadership role as the global electronics manufacturer. We now look forward to the semicondctor and electronics components supply chain coming together in India soon.
