It was the most exhilarating, and yet emotionally draining, week of my life. As my co-founders (Madhav Mirani and Mihir Kittur) and I prepare to retire from Ugam on 12/31, we had our last visit to our offices in Coimbatore, Bangalore, Thane, Goregaon - places which 4000 colleagues call their second ‘home’. There was lots of laughter, high fives, back slapping, stories (both real and urban myths 🙂), pictures, music, dancing, great food...but above all an incredible outpouring of love and affection. Tears flowed like a river with adult women and men alike (myself included) crying unabashedly as we shared what Ugam has meant to each other and impact on their lives. I haven’t felt the intensity of such emotions in a long time and not sure I will ever experience such a feeling again. Indeed, the best retirement “gift” one could ever hope for!!

As I reflect on the journey, never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that this is where we would be - among the top analytics companies in the world, having delivered 22 years of profitable growth, partnering some of the leading companies in the world, and shaping the careers of 17000 women and men who have worked at Ugam through the years. More important has been how we’ve done it: one team following one dream doing it the good old-fashioned way - one client at a time, smart work (not just hard work), upholding the highest levels of integrity, adhering closely to our core values at all times, and having a lot of fun along the way. All Ugamites - past and present - should be proud of this and I consider it my highest privilege to have led this company.

I also filed with deep GRATITUDE to many: my family (for spending many days/nights without me without demur), my co-founders (for going shoulder to shoulder, in good times and bad), our clients (who treated us like partners, being equally vested in our success), Merkle/dentsu (for not just “buying our business”, but “giving us a home”), and most of all to Ugamites. I am who I am because of YOU. I have learned from each one of you through every interaction. We have challenged each other to the limit, only to discover that we can climb higher. We have laughed and cried together; we have celebrated our success and commiserated over our losses; we have screamed at each other one day and danced together on the next. You have incurred my wrath and tolerated my quirks, but yet showered me with nothing but love and affection, fed me with great food, and regaled me with soul stirring music. The memories of all our interactions are PRICELESS which I will cherish forever. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I will dearly miss the friendships, the camaraderie and the bonding. For me, the letter “U” in Ugam will always be "YOU". I will forever be cheering for your continued success at Merkle and Dentsu. I wish you nothing but the best and I know you will continue to do us all proud!

Until we meet again….

When we left office to go home on Friday, March 13th, 2020, who would’ve thought it would be 311 days before we could go back again ! Incredible feeling to go to the office and meet Ugamites in person - even if we were all masked up, and physically distanced. Great job by the Return to Office (RTO) team in making this happen; while by no means a declaration of victory over the virus, this marks an extremely measured, calibrated and (hopefully) irreversible path towards “Workplace 2.0”.
