It's time for climate investors to look this beast in the eye.
A new Trump administration could dismantle the IRA and other climate legislation using:
- Executive actions — Difficulty: easy | Permanence: low | Likelihood: high
- Budgetary influence — Difficulty: easy | Permanence: low | Likelihood: high
- Judicial challenges — Difficulty: medium | Permanence: medium | Likelihood: a near certainty
- New legislation — Difficulty: hard | Permanence: moderate | Likelihood: low
They'd also roll back regulations that have been creating market tailwinds for a lot of climate tech companies, probably as their first order of business as the Republican Party's real power is laser-focused on deregulation and tax favoritism for a few large business interests
But, none of this should be used as an excuse to pull back on climate investing and continued climate innovation because arresting the wave isn't as easy as the Trump campaign makes it sound
The work we do here is in response to long-term secular trends that can be accelerated by policy, but not stopped by it
