As I continue traveling across Europe and meeting startup founders, I often receive the question, "Do you think the jurisdiction of a startup company matters?" I cannot give a straightforward answer.

Remember how COVID-19 changed our approach? Many European VCs began investing directly in Europe, bypassing U.S. entities. Startups realized they could make their initial push at home without spending significantly more money in the US. But it seems another shift is on the horizon.

Why?

Firstly, AI is a significant driver in the technology world today, and the EU's stringent regulations on AI compliance are becoming a significant challenge. This could push startups towards more accommodating jurisdictions.

Secondly, the potential increase in the capital gains tax rate, up to 50%, is likely to reshape the landscape as well.

Do you think these changes might attract more startups to the U.S.?

Ever Wondered Why Silicon Valley Draws the Best Talent? Some might point to the pursuit of a higher quality of life or better opportunities as a mail reason to come to Silicon Valley. While that's true in some cases, I believe the primary driver for the intellectual elite to come to Silicon Valley is its unique environment. There is no place like Silicon Valley when it comes to fostering a dynamic and competitive atmosphere. The sheer scale, scope, and entrepreneurial spirit in Silicon Valley create unparalleled opportunities for innovation and growth.

This conclusion was reaffirmed during my recent trip to Switzerland, where I met with my clients—startups that began in Switzerland but eventually expanded to the US. Switzerland undoubtedly offers a very high quality of life, a robust support system, and ample capital for startups. However, the startup ecosystem there is quite different. Switzerland provides excellent infrastructure and support for deep tech companies, where product development can take many years. But when it comes to scaling, growth, and expansion, the US startup ecosystem may offer more advantages.

It was enlightening to see firsthand the reasons behind the strategic moves of Swiss startups and the unique benefits each ecosystem provides.
