When someone puts you down, or something knocks you down, or injustice tears you down, or poverty wears you down, or all or all the facts and forces of life conspire to keep you down, how do you ever get up?   Life isn’t fair. Everyone isn’t born on Park Avenue. We do not live in the world according to Mr. Rodgers. For millions of the world’s children, it is anything but a beautiful day in the neighborhood.   Of the seven billion people who occupy this unequal world, almost one third (2.2 billion) are children—seven hundred million of whom have no place to lay their heads. Five hundred million have no access to sanitation. Four hundred million can’t even cup their hands under a clean pipe from which to draw safe water. Three hundred million know nothing of healthcare and more than two hundred million—mostly girls—have no book, no teacher, no school and almost no chance.      How can those kids overcome those odds? How can they ever rise up, or stand up, or move up—or even look up? The simple answer is that without an education they cannot. The only real answer to ignorance, superstition, disease, prejudice, poverty, endless violence, and pandemic personal despair, is education.     The world’s greatest treasure is its children. The world’s greatest crime is their neglect. The world’s greatest untapped resource is the brilliance, creativity, and moral imagination they represent.   Only with a fine education is it is possible for this young woman, or any young person raised in the most abject poverty, to rise above every obstacle and make their mark on the world.

GWSE is an all-volunteer charitable society. We are building an international board of Governors, Visitors, and welcoming those with special expertise in finance, wealth-management, educational technology, and new media marketing. If you have a gift, bring it!

“Out of the huts of history's shame I rise Up from a past that's rooted in pain I rise… Leaving behind nights of terror and fear I rise Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear I rise Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise I rise I rise.” #irise ― Maya Angelou
