Today, I watched "Air" alongside my Nike Sports Marketing teammates.

I walked out of the theater with adrenaline rushing and elation. I was proud of our origins - the instinct and "feeling" - in making sponsorship deals, and I was excited about the future.

Before the movie began, I turned to my teammate and said, "I need to rebrand myself. I am a marketer!" Having won DECA (a Marketing organization) competitions in high school and majoring in advertising to getting offers with the biggest brands in the world like Coca-Cola and P&G in business school, I chose a path focused on data & analytics. While I sharpened these skills over the years at Nike, my marketing days seemed like a cherished dream I once had.

And so, the movie had an effect on me that will unequivocally change my perceived branding of myself -- I am a marketer, but I am also a scientist. I leverage data and analytics to test hypotheses and drive decision-making. So, here's to now and the future, blending "the feeling" with science.

Reading this article back to myself three years later -- wow, it still holds true.

It's been exciting to see content companies/networks grow sports fandom through documentaries ("Formula 1: Drive to Survive"), mockumentaries ("Mr. Throwback"), and sports television series ("Ted Lasso", "Hard Knocks"), outside traditional sports content such as live coverage and talk shows/podcasts. However, I challenge sports entities to do more.

Sports changed my life - it gave me a way to assimilate into American culture as a first-generation American born to immigrant parents, and it also gave me the confidence to perceive myself as "cool" because I played basketball. With sports reach to Gen-Z rapidly dwindling, we need to do more to relay the same emotional connection to sports as we felt growing up.
