Highlights
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know that Taylor Swift launched a new album today. Before the album went live, #TTPD broke the record for the most pre-saved album in Spotify history.
So why am I posting about this? Not only was this a brilliant marketing campaign, but the campaign itself was supported by nothing other than Bitly QR codes 🙌
Here’s a breakdown of the campaign and some thoughts:
Earlier this week, a mural featuring a giant QR Code started going up in Chicago. Quickly, it became the chatter of Taylor Nation. The QR Code went to a YouTube Shorts video that showed a single typewriter-style letter. This is where things get interesting - this campaign placed not one, but 13 QR Codes in locations around the world.
A global virtual scavenger hunt, led by Swifties, was on!
A record shop in Sao Paulo, Brazil, a cafe in Paris, a building at night-time in Berlin, London, Nashville, New York, and LA. Scans that started a frenzy on social media to decode the type-written anagram.
Following from here, I was struck by a few observations:
✅ This campaign hit the bullseye with their audience. Swifties are well-known for uncovering Easter eggs from Swift. Blending the physical and digital world with this scavenger hunt was an ingenious way to tap into that offline activation and keep fans engaged and excited.
✅ It is also a powerful testament to the immense potential of QR Codes when executed creatively. This campaign is a prime example of how thinking creatively can forge powerful connections and captivate audiences on a global scale. This is the vision behind our platform. We don’t only create products; we create products that become the catalysts for connections with our customers' audiences.
✅ You really need to trust your tech if you’re going to run a global activation like this. As a marketer, reliability is key. You often only get one shot to capture attention and engage your audience, so you must ensure every experience you create is seamless. Reliability is our bread and butter, and I’m super proud that we can support massive campaigns on a global scale.
And we’re all pretty proud to say… that even a campaign of this magnitude won’t break Bitly 😉
As I sit here listening to The Tortured Poet's Department (which by the way is a GREAT album), I am SO jazzed about how cool it is to be part of such an amazing product and team.
