Confession: I've actually experienced quiet firing. Most recently with a CEO change. The new CEO had her own way of doing things and she knew whom she wanted on her team, if you didn't live up to her ethnic expectations or you proved you had an intelligent bone in your brain, she made it difficult to stay.

Even though there were signs, I persevered. I had been there 3 years. I liked my coworkers and I liked the overall company mission. When the person in the job above me retired, I asked to be promoted, to a position I had successfully held at a previous employer. I was demeaned and given completely inane reasons I would not even be considered "If you want to show me other examples of your work . . . "

As she gradually took away my responsibilities and insulted my education and skills, I began to quietly quit. She changed the hours she wanted me to report to work and then ignored me while I was at work.  I used the time to update my certifications, studied to improve my skills, and accepted calls from recruiters.

Years before, when I was studying for my Master's degree, a well known entrepreneur came to speak to our group. One thing he said was "hire right, fire fast." If you really don't want someone on your team, have a frank discussion and help them find other employment.
To do otherwise is cruel.
