The Beatles needed a creative outlet?!? Look, if the Fab Four took a break from their “work” to focus on art for arts sake, surely we all can benefit from cultivating an unexplored aspect of our creative nature.
Years ago I was invited as a guest practitioner to facilitate a session during a “Leadership Lab”. This annual experiment at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity involved about 30 leaders working together in teams, discussing and developing strategies around a complex case study. At the end of the 3-day offsite, they would present their conclusions.
The experimental aspect of what sounds like a pretty standard MBA exercise, was that their days were spent participating in creative activities. The teams were taken through classes in pottery, improv theatre, painting, music, a guided nature walks.
That year the topic was Leader as Designer (back in 2006 “design thinking” applied to leadership was a very new concept) but we facilitators were, untypically, NOT asked not to link our “art” with skills relevant to the topic; the “lab experiment” was to see how experiencing purely creative activities affected their thinking.
The group presentations were impressive but their sharing on how getting up to their elbows in clay, on their feet improvising in real time, and brushing colours onto canvas affected them as individuals and co-creators was astonishing, and for us as arts facilitators, affirming.
