“Why was it necessary to create your role?”

I want to thank ali jackson-jolley for wasting no time with her first question during our recent Forbes Talks interview!

With an unusual title like Chief Opportunity Officer, I’m used to explaining why Guild created the role earlier this year and why I think it’s critical to address the systems and mindsets that ultimately hold people back from opportunity.

Sometimes the issues are structural. A lot of companies try to inspire growth by outlining the pathways that people can take or helping with things like resume skills, but growth can become a false promise when these steps aren’t paired with other fundamental types of support that many people who have been historically overlooked need in order to focus on growth.

Sometimes the issues are personal. Guild employs a large number of coaches because we know how important it is to work with people to build their confidence and help them unlock the opportunity in themselves.

I believe we’re going to see more of a focus on opportunity at organizations, especially as the imperative to solve the skills crisis grows sharper into focus.

The divide between potential and opportunity is too big for too many people.  Personally, I’m sick of it.

That’s why I’ve dedicated the last six years to our work at Guild Education, where we’re focused on unlocking opportunity for America’s workforce — and I personally get to focus on the outcomes for our members and our own employees in my role as Chief Opportunity Officer.

Today is a big day for us because we’re doubling down on our focus to help talent rise, no matter where it lives in this country. We have a fresh new look, a clearer focus on driving career mobility pathways and outcomes, and a new product to help our members get there.

I’m particularly excited about Career Accelerator, which will help our members achieve confidence in their ability to navigate the job search process and fill in-demand roles at their employer using on-demand, bite-sized content and interactive activities. To complement Career Accelerator, we’ll also continue to enhance our coaching capabilities to include more specialized knowledge to support members in gaining insight into the roles they want to pursue and develop strategies to get there.

I had the chance to write some thoughts about why this journey is so meaningful to me, so I invite you to check out my story and some from Guild’s inspiring learners. https://lnkd.in/gFGDHJVc
